Q&A With Nancy Noise

Nancy Noise is one of the originals. She first visited Ibiza in 1986 which created a love affair that continues to this day. During the summers of ’86 and ’87, her home was the club Amnesia where she spent long nights dancing in front of the speakers to the sounds of Leo Mas and Alfredo, often venturing up to ask what the record was they had just played. If you ask Nancy what made Amnesia special, she’ll tell you:

“It was the music, the vibe, dancing under the stars all night long and that eclectic mix played the right way, that worked so perfectly.”

During the summer of 1987, Nancy met Ian St.Paul and Paul Oakenfold who had also fallen in love with Amnesia. On arrival back to London they wanted to continue the party so held a few nights, which resulted in them finding a regular venue. Oakenfold knew that Nancy was a music lover and had been buying the records she had been dancing to over the last couple of summers, so he asked her to DJ. The club was ‘Future’ and it is now part of London clubbing history.

Within weeks, Future was one of the busiest parties in London and a fundamental part of the early Acid House scene. From here Spectrum, Loud Noise and Land of Oz followed. Nancy soon became one of the early DJs, playing for i-D magazine world tours. Alongside this she was working hand in hand with Paul Oakenfold at Profile Records then onto the newly formed Perfecto Records, one of the earliest UK-based record labels to come out of the Acid House scene, which again led to playing at Perfecto parties in New York and Pacha in Ibiza.

Through the 90’s, Nancy played all over at many of the clubs that went on to be the ‘Superclubs’. After having a break to be a Mamma, she then got back behind the decks and for the last few years has been bringing her vibe and playing sunset sets, at festivals, rooftops, clubs, and the like.

Nancy Noise is one of those modest people that feels no need to shout (though she does like the odd “Arreeeeebba”) – she loves music, playing at parties for people that care and keeping her very original style of DJing alive and well – bring the (Nancy) Noise.

Nancy and Nichola – our founder, met at the Café De Paris club in Soho around 1992 where Nichola was hosting a night for Kiss Fm. They hit it off straight away and from that moment, Nancy played at all Nik’s clubs as a resident. Nancy introduced Nik to Ibiza and the rest is history!!!! Nichola and Nancy remain close friends to this day and are both elated to be working on this project together.

“Nancy’s sensitivity as a person comes through in all her music, each mix is a beautiful trip that takes you to the deepest part of Nancy’s heart and soul, which is a lovely place to be!” said Nichola.

We thought it’d be fun to do a little Q&A with our DJ’s, here’s Nancy’s:

BEST SCENE EVER

“One of my fave scenes ever is when Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper perform their dance in the movie ‘Silver Linings Playbook’. They have such great chemistry. It’s a pure heart-warming magic moment, and I’ve included the track from that scene in my Spotify playlist for HY.”

ONE OF YOUR MOST LOVED SOUNDTRACKS

“Sweet charity – it’s so 60’s and I love anything 1960’s! Rhythm of life – Sammy Davis Jnr is epic, Hey Big Spender, The Aloof club scene – so so good, Bob Fosse’s choreography is amazing.”

LAST SUPPER

“Delicious Thai food or seafood pasta with ice cold wine and a French Frasier cake watching the sunset on a beautiful beach!”

GUILTY PLEASURE

“Fish finger sandwiches – but I do posh them up with different breads – loads of rocket, fresh lemon, capers, black pepper and good sauces.”

WHAT DO YOU LOVE TO COOK

“A nice roast dinner, there’s a fair bit to do but the results are always satisfying.”

So that concludes our Q&A with Nancy – now back to the music!

‘Balearic Queen’ and our dear friend, Nancy Noise is kicking off our new monthly DJ mixes on Mixcloud and playlists on Spotify.
