Q&A With Charlie Dark

Charlie Dark looking into the camera and smiling

When not out running the streets with his urban run collective Run Dem Crew, teaching Yoga or advocating mental health and wellness amongst his peers, Charlie Dark can be found playing records to dance floors across the globe.

Raised in South London on a diet of pirate radio and warehouse parties, Charlie has been spinning records and igniting dance floors since the early eighties. From his time on Mo Wax records with Attica Blues in the 90’s, a major label deal on Sony Records and the plethora of remixes and productions, deejaying and bringing people together has been at the heart of everything he’s gone on to achieve. If you ever caught his Blacktronica Parties, sets at the legendary Plastic People or listened to his radio shows, then you’ll know that ‘All forms of music in one room the way it used to be’ has always been his motto and his record crates run deep.

With a vast record collection spanning various genres, his predominately vinyl sets are known for their eclecticism spanning Dub to Disco to House, Funk, Soul, Reggae, African gems and beyond. Uplifting energy filled genre jumping sets, classic rotary mixers, quality sound, hosted by a selector who always brings the joyful vibes.

Catch him every Friday morning on Worldwide FM with his ever popular ‘Peace, Positivity and Blessings’ show, monthly on Radio Alhara, or on his own station Run Dem Radio.

We thought it’d be fun to do a little Q&A with Charlie so here goes:

BEST SCENE EVER

“There’s a scene in ‘Do The Right Thing’ where someone steps on the Air Jordans of ‘Bugging Out’ who is one of the main characters. I clearly remember the whole cinema grasping when the scene went down. Back when the film was released, Air Jordans were rare, expensive and treasured by all. This scene resonates until this day. Stepping on someone’s clean white trainers should be a criminal offence :)”

ONE OF YOUR MOST LOVED SOUNDTRACKS

“The soundtrack of a film called ‘Paris, Texas’ has always been a favourite but my number one has to be the soundtrack of ‘Do The Right Thing’.”

LAST SUPPER

“Grilled lobster all day long.”

GUILTY PLEASURE

“Singing the main theme from ‘Cats’ with my partners. I do love a musical duet.”

WHAT DO YOU LOVE TO COOK?

“Seafood pasta always brings the house down. Even my kids like it.”

So that concludes our Q&A with Charlie  – now let’s get to the music.

As part of our monthly guest DJ sets on #Mixcloud and next in the line-up to continue our monthly sessions is Charlie Dark, who will be kicking us off with this…

‘STAND STRONG STAY AWESOME – JUL 22 – BY CHARLIE DARK’

“90 minutes of uplifting music to lift the soul and move the feet, from Reggae to Funk to Disco and beyond.”

Have a listen, like and follow. Oh, and please share these beautiful vibes.
